As every massage therapist knows, the use of stones in our profession is invaluable.
But…don’t be fooled by the claims made by many of the people selling stones. Some will try to tell you that stones have some “special quality” and are nearly a miracle. The simple fact of the matter is that stones have an innate ability to hold heat well. Some may tout the wonders of Basalt. The simple fact of the matter is basalt is an igneous stone. Igneous stones hold heat well. Some sites you look at will show you beautiful, shiny stones that look so pretty. The simple fact is that when you oil the stones, they take on a luster and just simply look better.

So, again, we say don’t be fooled. As you know, stones are used worldwide by massage therapists. Quite simply, heated stones warm the body, open the pores and therefore make the body more susceptible to the therapy we are rendering.
What are the benefits of stones?
Effleurage Tool
The smoothness and shape of the stones will enhance such gliding techniques used in Swedish massage. A little oil applied to the stones allows a graceful effleurage movement while warming the muscle with every each inch of movement. It is similar to "ironing" a muscle.
Pressure Point Tool
The natural tumbling of Hot Stones permits each stone to have its own unique shape, size, and function. Certain stones will call to you to be used in pressure point application. Reflexology and trigger point treatments can definitely benefit by allowing deeper work without the strain on the thumbs and wrists.
Compression Tool
The weight of the stones provides physical and mental comfort and enhances the compression technique. As they cool, they can remain on a certain spot giving it that extra attention while you work on other parts of the body. Just to hold Hot Stones in the palm of the hand provides a soothing, grounded feeling.
Thermotherapy Tool
The heat
and cold retention capabilities of Hot Stones make them excellent thermotherapy
tools. When warmed, the natural heat given by the stones warms the muscles and
quickly relaxes the client. This allows the therapists to do deeper, more
specific work in the time allowed for the massage.
When frozen, they reduce inflammation to injury and can be used in all cases
that ice would be appropriate. The alternating of heat and ice is a
well-practiced method of releasing toxins and increasing circulation. Hot Stones
provide a uniform element to apply the heat and cold while preventing cold drips
from the ice bag.
A Health Aid
It is not uncommon for therapist to be in need of treatment more than the clients. Most bodywork is physical and can cause undue strain on the fingers, hands, and wrists. Without compromising your own health, there is a way to work on that client who wants a deeper massage. Hot Stones are the perfect tools to provide relief for sore and tired hands of massage therapists. The heat works with you and warms the muscles and the hardness and weight of the stone assist in pressure releasing.
About our Stones
Heated stone massage treatments use stones made of an igneous material. Igneous stones have been found to have the best heat retention capabilities therefore, the best for therapeutic purpose.
When clean and un-oiled, the natural color of igneous stones may vary; many are gray to black with some having a strong greenish hue.
